Volunteers Welcome!
Volunteers come and go
Today, among others, we’re saying goodbye to Xaviera Pieplenbosch. As a volunteer-and freshly graduated as an intercultural scientist from Utrecht University-she lived in Paparisa for six weeks and worked with us on our program. She really struck gold, because during that period HGI was invited twice by the chair of the youth association (AMGPM): to attend a festival on Nusalaut and a conference on Haruku. Besides the fact that it all turned out to be quite an adventure, Xaviera learned, saw, and experienced a lot. As a tourist, you don’t get that. As an HGI volunteer, it’s a great bonus
The mini badminton tournament was a success!
Uncle Daniel Tahitu, together with his wife Maud and granddaughter Jody, visited Paparisa TML for almost a week. Uncle Daniel is a badminton coach and volunteered his time to get the children in Haria excited about the sport. Football is what dominates here-but of course, there’s more
Waste and sports-what do they have to do with each other?
To influence how people deal with waste on a small island like Saparua, sports and games are the binding factor-while at the same time bringing our message about protecting Mother Earth into the spotlight. Waste connects
It was truly fun and inspiring to see how an experienced coach works with children. Aunt Els chips in too-she provides snacks and drinks and brings the whole organization together! TOP!
The prizes were of course handed out by the master himself! A Dutch bandana couldn’t be missing as the first prize. Completed with school supplies and a nice keychain as a keepsake for all participants. They’re modest prizes, but very much appreciated. Volunteers like Uncle Daniel and Aunt Els are exactly the kind of people we can use here.
Is this something for you too-if you’re on Saparua anyway for a holiday or family visit? Helping to make living conditions here a little better? You can sign up here!
